SiteStyleGuide (sitestyleguide.com) is run by Deliberate Pty Ltd, PO Box 32, Bassendean WA 6054, Australia. This page explains what we collect about you, why, who else sees it, how long we keep it, and what you can ask us to do. Questions go to hello@sitestyleguide.com, or by post to the address above.
The short version: you can read every style guide without an account and without telling us anything. If you make an account, we keep your email address, username and a scrambled copy of your password, and we send you our fortnightly newsletter, which you can stop at any time. We don’t sell anything about you, and we don’t show you ads based on it.
What we collect
If you just visit
- Server logs. Like every website, our server records each request: your IP address, the page, the time and your browser’s name. We use these to keep the site running and to stop abuse.
- Limits. To stop floods of requests, we count some actions (sign-up attempts, reports) per visitor. We don’t store your IP address for this, only a scrambled code made from it that can’t be turned back into the address.
- Guide views. We count how many people look at each style guide, once per person per day, so members can see how their guides are doing. To count each person once we keep a scrambled code made from your IP address and browser for two days, then delete it. Only the daily totals are kept.
- Analytics, if you allow it (see “Cookies and similar” below).
If you make an account
- Your email address, to confirm it’s yours, sign you in, reset your password and send the newsletter, “your guide is ready” emails and alerts when guides you saved change (which you can switch off). It is never shown to anyone.
- Your username, which is public: it’s shown on guides you add and on your public page.
- Your public page at sitestyleguide.com/@yourusername, showing your username, the month you joined, and the guides you’ve added with their views and saves. You can hide it on your account page.
- Your first name, country and city, only if you add them on your account page. They’re shown on your public page unless you hide them; we also use your first name to greet you in emails, and your country and city to understand where members are.
- Your password, stored only as a one-way hash (Argon2id). We can’t read it.
- Sign-in history: the time, IP address and browser of each sign-in, kept for 90 days, so you and we can spot sign-ins that weren’t you.
- What you do here: the sites you add, the guides you save, reports you send, and when you agreed to the newsletter.
If you subscribe to Pro
- Payments are handled by Stripe. You enter your card on Stripe’s own pages; we never see or store your card number.
- What we keep: your Stripe customer and subscription numbers, your plan (monthly or yearly), whether it’s on a trial, active or set to cancel, and the date it runs to. Stripe tells us about changes, such as a renewal or a cancellation, so Pro switches on and off by itself.
- Private guides you capture are shown to nobody but you. Our admins can see them, only to keep the service safe or to help you when you ask.
If you contact us
- Takedown requests: the website, your email address and your reason, so we can act on it and reply.
- Reports about a guide: the reason and any note. If you’re signed in, your account; if not, only a scrambled code made from your IP address.
- Emails you send us.
About websites
Style guides are made from what websites publish openly: their stylesheets, logos, icons, page titles and descriptions. They describe businesses and organisations, not people. For some guides, a site’s public homepage text, colours and typefaces are sent to Anthropic’s Claude, which writes the colour names and notes on type and voice; nothing about you is sent. If you run a website and want its guide removed, use the takedown form.
Why we use it
- To run your account and the features you use (contract).
- To send the newsletter. It comes with every account, and the sign-up form says so; you can unsubscribe in one click from any issue or from your account, and keep your account (your consent, which you can withdraw). If an issue bounces or is marked as spam, our email provider tells us and we stop sending it to you.
- To keep the site safe: stopping spam sign-ups, abuse and attacks (our legitimate interest in running a safe service).
- To understand which pages are useful, through analytics you allow (your consent).
- To meet legal obligations, such as answering lawful requests.
Who else sees it
We use a few services to run the site. They handle your information only to do that job for us:
| Service | What for | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Our hosting provider | Running the server | Everything stored on the server |
| Resend | Sending email | Your email address and the emails we send you |
| Cloudflare Turnstile | Checking that forms are filled in by people | Your IP address and browser details, on the sign-up, takedown and report forms |
| Google Analytics | Counting visits | Pages visited, rough location and device details, if you allow it |
| Stripe | Taking payment for Pro | Your email address, card and billing details, and what you bought, if you subscribe |
| Anthropic (Claude) | Writing notes on some guides | Public websites’ homepage text, colours and typefaces; nothing about you |
Some of these services are in the United States, so your information may be handled there. We don’t sell or rent your information, and we only share it otherwise if the law requires it.
Sponsor units
Some pages show one small sponsor unit, labelled “Sponsored”. We serve it ourselves: no ad network, no third-party scripts, no cookies, and nothing about you is shared with the sponsor. We count how often each unit is shown, seen (at least half on screen for a second) and clicked, using the same two-day scrambled code as guide views so each person counts once a day. Clicking one takes you to the sponsor’s website, whose own privacy policy then applies.
Cookies and similar
- Session cookie (
__Host-ssg): keeps you signed in and protects forms. Needed for the site to work, so it isn’t optional. It ends when you close your browser, or after 30 days if you choose “Keep me signed in”. - Google Analytics cookies: only if you allow them. If your device is set to a European time zone we ask first; elsewhere they’re on unless you turn them off with “Analytics settings” at the foot of any page.
- Your choices, kept in your browser (not cookies, and never sent to us): your theme (light, dark or automatic) and your analytics choice.
Typefaces are served from our own server, so reading a guide doesn’t contact Google Fonts.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Your account, saved guides and newsletter record | Until you delete your account |
| Sign-in history | 90 days |
| Scrambled codes used to count guide views | 2 days |
| Unconfirmed sign-ups | 7 days |
| Password reset and email change links | Until used, or a day at most |
| Takedown requests and reports | As long as needed to deal with them and keep a record |
| Pro billing records (plan, dates, Stripe numbers) | Until you delete your account. Stripe keeps payment records for as long as tax law requires, usually 5 years |
| Database backups | 7 days |
| Server logs | A few weeks |
When you delete your account, your email address, password, saved guides, newsletter record and sign-in history are deleted at once, along with any private guides, and a Pro subscription is cancelled. Guides you added stay up, credited to “a former member”, and your username can’t be taken by anyone else for 90 days. Copies in backups disappear within 7 days.
Your rights
You can see and change your email, username, password, newsletter and alert settings on your account, and delete your account there. You can also ask us, at hello@sitestyleguide.com, for a copy of what we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, or to stop using it for something. We’ll answer within 30 days.
We follow the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988. If you’re in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you also have rights under the GDPR, including to object and to take your information elsewhere. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, tell us first; you can also complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au) or your local data protection authority.
Security
Passwords are hashed, admin accounts need a code from an authenticator app, every form is protected against forgery, and the site runs over HTTPS only. No system is perfectly secure; if something goes wrong that affects you, we’ll tell you.
Children
SiteStyleGuide isn’t meant for children under 16, and they shouldn’t make an account.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If a change matters, we’ll email account holders first.
